3 Foods That Avoid That Make You Age Faster
Everyone knows that a healthy diet is important, but most people don’t realize that the types of foods they eat can accelerate the aging process!
Now, what does it really mean to age more quickly?
It can mean a whole lot of things - especially getting the symptoms that many people associate with getting older. Here are just a few examples…
- joint pains and arthritis
- lower energy levels
- more wrinkles
- slower thinking
- decreased flexibility and mobility
- slower metabolism (with fat gain)
- loss of strength and becoming frail
And a whole lot more.
Now, 10 years ago, if you told me that certain foods could cause all of these things to happen, I would’ve called you crazy!
In fact, I didn’t even listen to my holistic doctor at first when she told me to avoid certain foods since nothing else was helping my terrible joint pain.
But when I finally did listen to her, and started doing a ton of my own reading and reading and research, I finally noticed major improvements in my health and symptoms.
Avoiding the three foods below helped me in ways where countless practitioners and therapies failed to get me any long term relief.
This included doctors visits, pharmaceutical prescriptions, and thousands of dollars spent on physical therapy, chiropractic, and acupuncture failed to get me long term relief.
Before avoiding these foods, my friends and I joked that I was a 60-year-old trapped inside a 21-year-old’s body. But now, I’m just an old soul who feels fantastic, pain free, and full of energy!
And avoiding these three foods below are now helping countless people reverse and prevent the symptoms of aging, whether they’re in their 50s, 60s or even older.
But if you’re like I was – you might (understandably) be skeptical.
“How the heck can eating a certain food cause my joints to hurt, or my cognition to decline?”
Well, it all starts with inflammation. In fact, even in conventional medicine today, doctors and researchers are aware that inflammation is at the root of pretty much all symptoms and diseases.
It’s at the root of the symptoms I mentioned above. And it’s also at the root of cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, autoimmune disease and so much more.
And to top that off, research is finding many links between inflammation and aging.
Researchers even go as far to say, “Human aging is characterized by a chronic, low-grade inflammation.” (Study)
So if you’re able to drastically reduce the inflammation in your body, then you can greatly slow down the aging process, live longer and feel a whole lot better each and everyday.
And here’s where food comes in.
Some foods cause much more inflammation than other foods when you eat them.
Eating more inflammatory foods = accelerated aging and increased symptoms
Avoiding inflammatory foods = slower aging and less symptoms
It really is that simple!
It’s amazing how countless clients have told me their aches and pains completely vanished just by changing their diet, without any major physical therapy or massage!
And not only that, but lots of fat loss (that stays off), increased energy levels, and glowing skin that has their friends asking “What kind of treatment did you get done to your face?? Your skin looks amazing!”
Sometimes it even feels like a miracle, but in reality, it’s just science and eating what your body wants, and (avoiding what it doesn’t want)!
Now here are the 3 foods that can make you age faster by causing a lot of inflammation.
1. Foods containing gluten.
Yes, the ‘gluten-free’ fad isn’t going anywhere, and I guarantee you that it’s only gaining more traction.
Luckily, it’s becoming easier and easier to avoid these foods as more people (and more doctors and nutritionists) are finally becoming aware of how inflammatory gluten is to people.
Gluten is the protein found in wheat, and it’s going to be found in conventional breads, muffins, cupcakes, pizza crusts, lots of frozen, processed meals and other similar foods.
It binds foods together and can make the texture more pleasurable. It also has creates an opioid response in your brain!
(In other words – it is highly addictive. There’s a reason why it can be so difficult to just have one breadstick! That opioid response makes more body crave more as if it were a real drug!)
As humans, we don’t have all the enzymes to break it down, especially since it’s been hybridized since the 1940s. It irritates our gut and causes a whole lot of inflammation.
But here’s the main thing with gluten… being 90% gluten free will not give you 90% of the benefits. In fact, it probably won’t even give you 50% of the benefits (I know, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news).
That’s because the inflammation it causes isn’t just a quick reaction that goes away quickly.
You typically don’t feel a throbbing pain happen in your body the second you eat gluten – it can take up to three days for you to feel the inflammation slowly creep up.
And these inflammatory reactions can last for 3 to 4 weeks and manifest as joint pain, brain fog, fatigue or even depression!
So just one piece of bread, or one cookie, per week is more than enough to keep those reactions going, causing you to age at a much faster pace than you want to.
That’s why it’s important to commit to being 100% gluten free if you really want to get the benefits. And here’s where many people who try going “gluten free” fail, and don’t get results.
But don’t worry – this doesn’t mean you can’t ever have a cupcake or slice of pizza again if you want to have a thriving, healthy, fulfilling life!
First of all, there are many great gluten free alternatives today that taste just as good (thanks to all the creative gluten-free foodies and chefs).
Also, some people are able to tolerate gluten in small amounts here and there, once they’ve cleared it out of their diet and allowed their body to heal. When I work with clients one-on-one, most of them will go gluten free for 60 days and feel amazing benefits!
(And yes, many of them thought it seemed impossible to do before they actually tried!)
After that, they slowly add it back in and see what works best for them.
2. Added sugars.
Added sugars are causing massive devastation throughout our country – and this is no understatement.
The average amount of sugar consumed per person in the United States has gone up by over 1400% in the last 200 years. That's 14 times the amount of sugar!
As a country, we’re addicted to it, and the food industry knows that adding sugar to their foods is cheap and makes people want more of it (despite knowing how much disease and sickness this causes).
In fact, research has shown that sugar is more addictive than cocaine. So if you find yourself struggling to battle your inner ‘sugar monster’ – please know that it’s not your fault.
And besides being terribly addictive, sugar causes a whole lot of other problems.
In our bodies, added sugars produce inflammatory cytokines, which go throughout your body and cause massive amounts of inflammation.
Too much sugar also causes your blood sugar to spike, which messes with your hormones and really zaps your energy in the long term!
However, sugar isn’t something you need to give up 100%. In fact, small to moderate amounts of sugar that are found in fruits and vegetables are very beneficial for us.
A good rule of thumb is to limit yourself to 35g of sugar per day, which is about two pieces of fruit.
And when buying packaged foods, it’s a great idea to start looking at labels – you’ll probably be surprised at how many companies add sugar to just about everything!
Added sugars come in many forms and it’s easy to fall for a lot of the marketing tactics used to make consumers think some forms are actually healthy.
But whether its agave nectar, honey, maple syrup, palm sugar, cane sugar or high fructose corn syrup… it’s still sugar and having much more than 35g per day will typically cause problems.
And if packaged foods don’t have an added sugar, then there’s a good chance that dates (a very sweet fruit) are one of the top ingredients, and these aren’t too far off from eating pure honey. In fact, many recipes love to use dates to replace sugar.
So also be on the lookout for ‘health bars’ that use a lot of dates for sweeteners – this was a mistake that I made for years!
(*Note: when choosing to have added sugar once in a while, dates, honey, and maple syrup are much healthier options than table sugar and high fructose corn syrup!)
3. Conventional, pasteurized dairy.
Many people are starting to find out on their own that dairy products typically don’t sit well with them, especially if they have gas or bloating symptoms.
Personally, it took me a while to figure out after years of drinking gallons of milk per week!
Eventually, when I was in poor health, just the tiniest sip of milk or bite of cheese would make me blow up like a balloon and then slowly deflate in a horribly smelly fashion!
The first issue with dairy, that everyone’s heard of, is lactose – the milk sugar. About 75% of people can’t properly digest lactose and it can be a major trigger for inflammation.
But there’s more to this dairy dilemma than lactose…
The casein protein in milk is also a big problem for many people. The casein molecule looks very similar to gluten, so sometimes this tricks the body into creating an inflammatory reaction.
And on top of that, the dairy we have now isn’t the same as it was less than 100 years ago. Since the 1950s, almost ALL cows are now fed grain and pumped with antibiotics, which drastically changes their milk and causes BIG problems in humans that consume it regularly.
While there’s much more grass-fed dairy available today (yay!), it’s still pasteurized which makes it tough to digest and still has the troublesome lactose and casein components.
When my clients give up dairy for 30-60 days, it’s not uncommon for seasonal allergies and congestion to go away, along with skin blemishes.
And the story here can often times be similar to gluten – to really stop the inflammatory reactions, giving it up 100% for 30-60 days is often required.
And one more side note about dairy... it's also addictive, just like gluten and sugar.
And those are the 3 types of foods that cause the most inflammation and accelerate the aging process.
So it’s no wonder that many people think feeling tired, lots of aches and pains, and a slower memory are “just a part of getting older.” As a society, we’re eating so many foods that don’t nourish us, but cause a whole lot of inflammation!
But the truth is, all of these nagging symptoms (and even scary diseases), don’t have to be a part of getting older. You can FEEL GREAT as you get older, well beyond your 50s and 60s!
And avoiding the foods above is a foundational component of aging successfully.
But after many people hear me talk about this, they ask, “So what CAN I eat?”
Again, the answer is pretty simple.
In order to have thriving health, it’s important to eat a very nutrient dense diet.
Because remember, the whole purpose of eating food is to nourish your body!
Everything you do throughout the day uses up energy and your body needs sufficient nutrients to create energy.
And if you’re not nourishing yourself, you can become depleted and your body won’t function very well.
Also, the more nourished your body is, the better it can heal itself and reduce inflammation.
Now, what are the most nutrient dense foods?
Real, whole, unprocessed foods have the most nutrients and also cause the least inflammation!
